Well, that "Crossroads"-inspired piece is now in the Fan Art section, if anyone's interested. I guess they will need to read this thread to see what it's all about, though.

I just saw it, and it's great. Loved it. I think Randall was my favorite, since I've always thought that drawing him was particularly challenging given the amount of fanart I've seen that has him looking a bit off, or "cartoonish". But I'm not an artist, so I really wouldn't know. He looked very real though, his scars and the added years, which is why I loved him in this one. Thanks for sharing that with us.
I agree that mentalguru's fic has spawned more inspiration, board discussions (general, crazy, mature, etc.) and probably everything else that ranges from daydreaming, song lyrics, and artwork than she really lets on.
No, no. Don't be so modest, mentalguru. You're responsible for all of this.
While I'm at it, I had never even listened to that song, "I'll Stand by You", until now, through youtube. That's probably something I wouldn't have done under other circumstances since I rarely look up music from other song-inspired artwork. This one made me do it.

Well Ran can be VERY difficult to make. Especially the thinness of his fingers (not to mention they're expanded suction-cup like at the end), and how he would move and everything. Most of us do the best we can and can sometimes make unexpected greatness ^_^
Thanks to you 0_- ^0^

Oh geez plot bunnies AGAIN. But I've promised myself- NO MORE multichapters until 'Connections' is finished, considering the pace I'm going at though... should be around when the sequel (if it transpires) runs around.
This is an AU idea, and it more or less is trying to give Boo a REAL chance to get over Randall. Basically I've realised Boo sort of had three main 'actions' she could have carried out when Sulley opened the girls door- she could have either just played with Sulley's tail, stayed in her room... or wandered off by herself.
In this last idea as well though I do take some artistic licence with some events- Randall catches up to her easily enough, but something DOES go wrong with the machine- it won't work at all, due to a simple small part they've forgotten about which they won't be able to get until a bit later and Waternoose when he tries to tell him this is well unhappy to say the least, says that it was bad ENOUGH that he had to get the security people 'distracted' ONCE, so it would be difficult (with the cameras there) to get her back just like THAT let alone get her AGAIN.
So Randall has to keep her for a while, at least a night, while Waternoose (acting all 'burdened', will somehow get that part to them in the morning).
It slightly amuses me. Randall sort of gets Fungus to help look after her so he can manage to steal some hours of sleep at his place (which Fungus TOTALLY cannot handle), and some things in Randall's apartment- like Boo making a 'fort' out of the little containment of the sofa that Fungus originally tried to place as a barrier, which Boo can use to hide and in order to 'attack' with rolled up bits of HIS paperwork (agh!).
Eventually though, over time though, Boo is going to stop fearing Randall due to increased exposure to him. Like the fact she evntually falls asleep near him in the same room, wakes up, and accidently scares HIM (due to his half asleep mind going -OHSHITHUMANKID- rather than fully remembereing kids aren't toxic) and that accidently causes Boo to laugh. Then there are funny things before hand like Randall absolutely HATING his rustbucket of a car, and Boo somehow locking the doors on him and Fungus and she is in NO mood to let him in or coming out before they go into his place. Heh heh. The kids is really going to get on his nerves but eventually under his skin too.
Plus cute things too.
Plus some dramatic things I'd want- like Waternoose banishing Sulley and RANDALL instead of Mike because of various reasons such as Waternoose tricking Sulley into thinking Randall has gone crazy and that RANDALL wants the kid for himself, likely twisted reasons (And granted given that he decides he can't go through with the whole thing anymore, W DOES think he's gone crazy).THEN the shock betrayal, as when Sulley starts to have... doubts over this legitimacy, actually LISTENING to him when he begs. Even Mike and Fungus getting some action and game on and redemption (though the things I think about when they finally all join forces is pretty hilarious, Mike and Randall are NOT going to get on even when they 'join forces'. Lots of insults and Sulley going "GUYS this is not the time or the PLACE. So shut up."* more or less.)
Gah. I want to write this story.
It sure as heck would be interesting IMO. But NO. Must concentrate on what I am doing NOW...
(Will probably break down and do it in a few months anyway...at least when I've posted a few more chapters) << >>
*"The chinaman is not the issue here!" (I keep thinking of that... darn you John Goodman!)
This story I think came as a result of me thinking a recent dream (yeah another one), where Mike, Sulley, Randall, Boo and Fungus are playing snowball fights... I don't know WHY but Boo is on Fungus and Randall's side in this HUGE fort which Mike is all serious about him and Sulley breaking into and Randall drops a HUGE snowball on Mike and Boo drops a smaller one on Sulley from above and Mike is basically engulfed in snow and Sulley is just laughing...
I don't know why, it made me happy this dream- kind of christmassy. LOL.

You know, mentalguru, I had once tried to do a similar fanfiction, at least insofar as Boo overcoming her fear of Randall. It's too bad you don't want to write it yet, especially as you write so much better than I ever could.

Heh. Don't flatter me S, I can get a big head when people do.
Still thanks for the encouragement, but you've got good imagination with your fanfics, and I'm sure you'll eventually go far with them.
(And not be really annoying LIKE ME, and leave people hanging so much with random hiatuses and broken promises of updates I don't keep... bah... -induces self loathing-)
Heh.
You're referring to the terminator one right? Yeah I read it, granted I am not much into terminator at all, so I feel I must have lost a LITTLE something there. Still good job.
I WANT TO WRITE IT.
Someday. But it will probably be a little while until that day comes. And if I DO ever post it I'll do something I've never done before hopefully... FINISH A STORY BEFORE I POST A SINGLE CHAPTER.
Seriously, this story would be SHORTER than the one I have now by a long shot, and there is a good writer in the Avatar fandom I know who does this- all but one of her fanfics was all written before she made that first posting, not to mention even the one she didn't she had planned- in DETAIL.
(It was an AU where Aang was the Fire Nation Prince and Zuko the Avatar, very enjoyable indeed. I pitied Azula so MUCH even when she met her demise- the writer treated her well, and the writer didn't turn her into some irreprensible evil person at all, even though she did bad things, heck, even worse things than on the actual show- she was starved of affection from her two parents completely over her 'perfect' yet banished brother Aang,... who loved his sister too yet she refused to see it. So sad!).
I should really try that sometime (write it all before I post... or at least most of it). XD.

Actually I was referring to a different story idea. I had abandoned it, though, mostly because, as you just pointed out yourself, much of the details were already covered in "P-9000: The Clensing". I don't like to be repetitive; once I explore an idea in a story, that's often the only time I write about that idea.

I've often wanted to write an AU in which Randall wound up having to keep Boo at his apartment or house for some time, myself, and during which he got the chance to make the same discoveries that Sulley did in the movie: kids aren't dangerous, human kids are just as intelligent/creative as monster kids, laughter from human kids generates far more energy than screams, and that he himself has some strong parental instincts that kick in, too. I'd gotten this funny mental image of this innocent little two-year-old finding one of Randall's uhm....magazines...you know, the kind with "Ms. October" in the middle...and her holding it up and turning her head to one side like she'd trying to figure out, "what are they doing", and him suddenly realizing what she's looking at and grabbing it away from her, very embarrassed!
I like the snowball fight thing, though anyone who gets themselves into a snowball fight with a guy who has four hands has got to know that they're gonna get PWNED, big-time!
AND...DO NOT call a Studebaker a "rust-bucket"! Randall would NEVER do that, especially since his little purple bullet-nosed convertible can make a believer out of anything on the road(I drive one, after all, and those things will haul A$$)! He might call it a "Stump Jumper"(an old country slang term for a Studebaker), but rust-bucket, no way, especially since Studes were made in Indiana, too...no better ride for a Hoosier. He seems pretty darn happy with that little Commander on the cover of the "Monsters Inc. Game of Life" box. I can promise it will leave Wazowski's "baby" looking like it's just sitting still in the middle of the road!

Actually, if anybody cares to remember....I HAD started a fanfic like this way back. Of course it was after most of the events transpired, but had Randall having to keep Boo, as they are both (well Randall is anyway) are on the run.
Hm hm. Can imagine Randall bugging off Fungus....fair enough he deserves to ^0^
Can imagine Boo somehow getting out of the car, accidently tripping the parking brake, and Randall and Fungus are watching (after arguging for too long of how to get her out) in horror as the car goes down the street and hits against a tree and probably explodes ^0^ Needless to say, Boo is revealed to be beside them as they witness this. Thata would be the cue for Randall to go ape#$(#$ about said-car ^0^ *stares* MY IDEA FOR THIS PART! *grabs* ^_^ -------------- Know how you feel Mental. I myself want to get started on that re-do of Randall's past in Collections, but have to finish the special for this Christmas since I have a due date. Oui...thankfully I'm almost done ^_^

Yeah, and it's always even more of a bugger when you're (originally) having trouble with a specific story and have other ones gnawing at the back of your brain.
At least (thanks partially to S, I MIGHT be getting a handle of things right now.)
Okay, okay, you'll probably start one WAY before me, but yeah, the whole car crashing is your idea, I won't steal it. XD.
--
Had NO idea he had a specific type of car PBL- still sounds like a sweet ride.
Ummm... I could see Randall however getting a fixer-upper, because it's cheaper though, you know something almost DEAD, and fixing it up somehow.
I kind of figured Randall would have a BAD car somehow myself, given the fact his wages wouldn't make him a millionaire.
Granted, it's pretty much a given Randall probably blew some money on SOMETHING regardless of his low pay check, and why not a car?
He's mechanically inclined.
(Is amused, as a sort of 'filler' scene in Connections I hope to add has a vehicle involved, an utter RUSTBUCKET of a thing which everyone in the group shares, it doesn't belong to one person, and alot of people clubbed together to buy it, on the cheap (if they have a license anyway), and while there are some members who DO know enough to keep it running, it needs CONTINUAL TUNEUPS. While members do have their own cars, they thought it would be good to have one on stand-by just in case.
But it's annoying.
If it was in cars, it would be a 'Mater' only not a tow truck and horrendously less reliable.
"To the Rescue-mobile!"
"THAT thing?"
I sometimes have second thoughts, and I think I would be more likely to cut alot of things about the thing, until it is needed- it's used in a few scenes, and while losing their cool over this thing is funny, I don't know how relevant it is other than what they use to get where they are going and Randall getting something he can teach Boo and Jack about.
Eh. Still could be used for humour.
(LOVES your idea about Boo finding a magazine BTW).
Eh other ideas include borrowing from the movie. Little moments. Only tweaked.
Like Sulley building the door for Randall instead of Mike for Sulley perhaps?
XD.
Yeah, it was an odd dream, but pretty light hearted. I think Sulley (in the dream) may have been secretly GLAD they 'lost' (judging by his laughter at any rate) rather than simply being a good sport, because Mike was taking the game a BIT too seriously, and kind of sucking the fun out of it for him. I do recall him eyerolling when Mike was getting all 'war/undercover-like' and OTT sort of like an utter spoof of war/spy movies.

Given Randall's mechanical inclinations, pretty much ANY car he gets is going to wind up being at least reliable, if not a totally sweet ride worthy of winning trophies. He's the sort who can pull a rotting hulk of rust out of a junkyard, and given enough time, can walk off with a few awards with it. I know a lot of people like that, who prefer to start with a "project car"(us classic auto afficianadoes don't like to call them "junk")and turn it into a showpiece. It's a labor of love, more than anything, and yes, it DOES get expensive, and this is something I personally know really well, but the satisfaction is worth it to know that at the very least, you restored a piece of history and you're keeping it going. That, combined with the competitive factor, would be incentive a plenty for Randall.
In the US, cars have GOT to be owned by SOMEONE to be on the road; you either have to have a title in some state or at least, a certificate of ownership for old cars, but to drive it, it must have an owner who has the registration for it. Each state has its own registration/titles, which have to be renewed each year when you renew the tags on the car(gotta have those, too). With Paul's influence, I tend to see him as being more of a "green" type, very concious of fuel economy and the impact on the environment, and very willing to sacrifice things like comfort, ammenities like a stereo or AC, and speed/power over reducing the "footprint" of said vehicle. Randall definitely strikes me as the sort who'd want a kickin' loud stereo, working AC, comfortable seating and an engine that will achieve 0-60 in less than four seconds(and a Studebaker 289 WILL do-Been There, Done That), so I can envision some lively, uh..."discussions" between the two of them on what is more important in a car.
Who knows, though, maybe one of the other differences between the Human World and the Monster World is that over there, Studebaker never went out of business and is the top automobile manufacterer. It would be quite an unpleasant surprise for Randall to learn that they went under on March 17, 1966, in our world. Most of the cars in our world now look the same, no matter what the make or model. My '09 Toyota Corolla looks identical to a Chevy Malibu...and to a Ford Focus, a Honda Accord, a Nissan Sentra, a Hyundai Sonata, a Pontiac G6...I could go on and on. At least in the Monster World, they still have unique cars that are readily identifiable by their appearance.

Yep, Paul is more 'practical' about that sort of thing. Randall would want his work to be TOP-NOTCH.
Randall's events with a vehicle wouldn't happen until MUCH later, he's going to find people becoming warmer to him because even though he sort of FAILS in trying something (not the vehicle, something else entirely), people in the group still appreciate what he did in TRYING to do so not to mention what he eventually wound up doing instead.
Which for Randall is going to throw him, but make him skeptical that it really is all that easy. He still wants to prove himself... as well as make sure they have a 'reason' for keeping him around.
He's not keen about the idea of going to the monster world at ALL despite his uncertainty regarding the stability of what he has- but he feels this is the best thing he's going to get, and the best thing that's happened to him in a while all the same, so he desperately wants to keep it. Even though he does honestly like fixing stuff in general- not just cars, not to mention building stuff, it's going to be almost an obsession in him proving his 'usefulness', which he gets the idea from due to the existence of the monster doctor who sticks around due to having morally felt he should, despite having probably been able to leave years ago.
(Poor Randall...)
R"WHY do you continue to torture me like this."
Me: "Because I like you! Heck look at Sulley, look at BOO, I like them too, but they're not exactly going to have it light either."
R: "But I'm getting the worst of it right?"
Me: "Well... yeah... you're kind of a MAGNET for bad luck and misunderstandings Randall."
R: "Huh."

Actually I already have the story somewhere a few chapters in either here or on Pixar Planet...but didn't think of the crash idea till today. Might redo it someday....though right now have allot on my hands.
Actually she got that from the monopoly game...personally I'm unsure if Randall did have a car like that (or one at all), he wouldn't take it out too much....not just because he'd have to fork over the cash for gas (which would probably climbed there too)...but also the slight chance that he might come out to see his car stolen right down to the frame.

I vaguely remember that story, RandallBoggs...starting with Celia uncertain whether to trust Randall or Waternoose, right? If so, it's here somewhere.
