I had mixed feelings when I found out that Randall would be in MU. EVERYTHING online about that movie initially stated that Randall would be the "bad guy" once again, and really made it seem like he was just going to be one of those stereotypical bullies-turned-villain, someone who was always evil, or at least was always a jerk, who'd make Mike and Sulley's college days miserable, for absolutely no reason at all. Even the commentary on the MI DVD stated that Randall "was probably one of those guys who was a bully way back in high school and just stayed a bully", something to that effect. Now, we know that was NOT true, not even close.

From the first picture I saw of MU Randall, with those big glasses looking nervous, I knew he couldn't be a bully. I spent a lot of time speculating what he'd be like. I was slightly disappointed we didn't find out more about him. I never brought that line on the MI DVD commentary about him always being a bully either. He didn't seem like a bully in MI. Bullies mock and threaten people because they enjoy it and the feeling of power it gives them. Randall never looked like he was enjoying it when he shouted at Fungus, he looked like he was at the end of his tether. I might have already said this but I didn't want to see Monsters Inc. when it first came out because I didn't want to see another film where the only reptilian character was the 2D villain. I tried very hard to see Randall how Disney/Pixar wanted me to see him, as a bully and a villain, but I just couldn't. All I could see was someone who was trying his hardest and still didn't feel he was good enough.

We had read that he would be in MU, though, long before any of the pictures of him surfaced, even before Pixar confirmed that this would be a prequel, rather than a real sequel, so that had me worried. The first any of us saw of MU Randall wasn't even a picture of HIM, per se, but of that Pez dispenser, and those pics got "leaked" of Randall, Mike, Sulley and Scott before Disney-Pixar wanted them seen, and were only up a day or two before they got taken down, but by then word was out that Randall wore "geek" glasses and had a big, friendly smile on his face, and didn't look the slightest bit evil or villainous, fueling speculation that his part in MU might be very different from his role in MI. pitbulllady

Yes. I personally thought that geek look with the glasses in the promo photos did a good job at making Randall NOT look like a villain at all. It made him look like just a friendly nerd eager to study in order to learn how to be the best scarer.
Personally, Randall's grin with his glasses made me think of Kevin Dorfman from the 'Monk' series. (Randall... whatever you do, do not - I repeat: DO... NOT become a magician! LOL) That was my first impression from the promo pictures, and as we all know, he was considerablely more sympathetic than the role he plays later in Monsters, Inc.
I even think the nickname 'Randy' was added deliberately to make him more endearing to mainstream fans. Monsters University was just an excellent film, and to me, Randall's story is what made it believable. Even before I saw his humiliation at the final Scare Games Task, I was FULLY expecting something profound and unfortunate to occur which would explain why he's now at odds with Sullivan in the second 'Monsters' film, and I'm glad it did.
