It's not the material, it's how difficult it is to work with, and the time and effort that goes into making something like that. It's one thing to sculpt something out of soft clay, but to carve it from rock or cast it in metal is VERY painstaking and difficult.

I wouldn't say they love money so much as the characters. The artists really won't be making much off of those pieces, even at what seems like a high price, due to the effort and labor and time they have to put in. I can tell you from experience how difficult and painstaking it is to carve each and every one of Randall's scales, since I've done it, and THAT was carving them in soft, pliant clay. THESE artists are carving them in GRANITE, one of the hardest rocks there is!

Yeah. Sullivan's fur is basically something you can't do. Randall's character, in merchandise form, takes the longest to create.

But all of their effort was definitely worth it- look at what they produced!

Well, someone COULD scult Sullivan's fur-fur is NOT as difficult as scales to sculpt, believe me. I've done both. Scales are arranged in a specific order or rows, whereas hairs aren't. Many of the old Classical Greek and Roman sculptors carved animals such as lions, often larger-than-life, from rock, though most did use marble, which is much softer and easier to carve than granite. AT least you know granite will last for hundreds of thousands of years. It would actually be easier to sculpt a large piece than a small one like those two figurines for sale, since you have more room for covering up any mistakes.

My LORD, this is gorgeous! I sorta wish the painting of Randall's coloration (at least along his spine) didn't look quite as "paint-by-the-numbers" as it does, but the sculpting job itself is absolutely phenomenal. And yeah, it IS rather encouraging to see a Randall ( and a Boo) figurine being released four years after the movie, especially since it seems to confirm that Disney doesn't see the value in killing Randall off, and that perhaps he just MIGHT get his second chance, after all! What I also find interesting, though, is that I don't see any previous MI sculptures in WDCC's archives; Randall and Boo are the first ones. I hafta wonder if that's indicative of true character popularity, rather than certain leading protagonists (who-shall-remain-nameless *cough*) that Disney might've once deemed the most marketable. I can tell you from experience how difficult and painstaking it is to carve each and every one of Randall's scales, since I've done it, and THAT was carving them in soft, pliant clay. THESE artists are carving them in GRANITE, one of the hardest rocks there is! pitbulllady Hmm...sorry, but I'm afraid the WDCC website says these are CLAY sculptures -- not granite -- the final ones of which are cut into pieces to make plaster molds, into which liquid clay is poured, partially air-dried, and then reassembled. Regardless, it still amounts to an extremely painstaking process, and when also looking at all the character research these artists invest in these sculptures, I can understand why they cost so much. Looks like I'm gonna hafta save my nickels and dimes, too, because this is too good to pass up! And Randall's sculptor...Valerie Edwards. All right -- she offically rocks right now. ;D ~Light Rises

Kneaded erasers are fun ;D Much better than using it to erase charcoal ... I like it's ... webby-ness ^^
Silly Putty too. That rocks ;D Might not be good to make figures out of though, since it kinda sinks when you mold it ...
